Greens MLA Jenny Macklin said it showed the "unprecedented level of hostility" against Labor's future, with the council's two MPs — the Greens and the National Party — going to court after the election.

Ms Macklin told AAP the council was dealing with people who were feeling "disempowered, disrespected and betrayed".

"There are a lot of residents here now who are deeply frustrated at what the mayor has achieved since he became mayor," she said.

"They believe he did not do his job and there are plenty of others who believe he has not done his job very well."

The Greens are also seeking a re-run of the council voting process, but the Liberal candidate has told AAP he opposes it.

On Thursday, Deputy Mayor Richard Perrottet ruled there would be no re-run of the election at all.

"I agree that the outcome of the election of Mayor Michael Thorneycroft will have been negative," he told The Daily Telegraph.

"My decision was based on my assessment of the public campaign that has been put out."

A spokeswoman for the Labor Party told The Age the local councillors "fear an electoral meltdown of sorts will erupt in the riding after the campaign" because of "an alarming level of opposition and vitriol that's come from councillors and residents across the city".

"The election of Mayor Thorneycroft reflects an astonishing lack of respect for the people of Sydney and an increasingly authoritarian attitude," the spokeswoman said.

One resident was "in despair" after the council voted to approve a $350 million road project that will add a $300 million freeway to a proposed bridge project that is the largest in the state.

"My view is that it does not take a lot of logic to realise there are lots of people out there who can vote for me but aren't thinking in the local interest," she said.

The project was rejected last week by some councillors and they will not be seeking re-election until August in the hope that they will win a second term.

They have warned local residents that "in the wake of election, we need to be very sensitive to the opinions of all of Sydney and particularly those who have voted for a Liberal candidate".

It said residents should check their current residence information with the Department of Emergency Services, before reporting to shelters to ensure they are up to date with current information.

Residents without a residence declaration may be eligible for special protection, which could include living in designated housing, temporary accommodation or alternative accommodation.

Residents wishing to be relocated to safer areas are advised to consult a safe referral service.

Residents should be aware that they are not entitled to full protection from storms, but the Department of Emergency Services encourages people to check the current conditions and to check before leaving if necessary.

Residents should check if their local government has issued evacuation lists and contact the nearest service.
